The M172 PLC controllers offer a comprehensive automation solution with various performance classes, communication and expansion modules, displays and sensors, as well as comprehensive system compatibility within the EcoStruxure™ Machine architecture. They are suitable for numerous applications in the HVAC and pump sector. M172 Optimized can be used to control small to large HVAC machines that are connected to GLT or the cloud. M172 Performance offers native connectivity for networked HVAC machines.

The Modicon M172 is the automation solution for a wide range of machines and applications in the HVAC and pump automation segment. These include:

  • air- or water-cooled refrigeration machines,
  • Heat pumps,
  • Compressor units,
  • Ventilation systems,
  • Precision air conditioning systems,
  • Heat recovery units
  • and air treatment systems.


A wide range of communication interfaces and protocols such as Ethernet, Modbus, BACnet, and LonWorks enable simple, efficient, and secure integration into building management systems (BMS) or connection to cloud applications and remote maintenance solutions.

With the free EcoStruxure™ Machine Expert – HVAC programming software, machines can now be programmed, visualized, and commissioned even more easily and quickly.

The M172 PLC controller is available in “Optimized” and “Performance” versions and includes several device types, which are classified according to function and compatibility.
Depending on the base device, the controllers are available with or without an integrated display and with or without an SSR output.
I/O expansion modules are mixed digital and analog I/O types.

  • Secure Interfaces: secure interfaces for establishing secure Internet connections with plug-in and gateway versions.

  • Communication modules: The modules provide interfaces to:
    – BACnet MS/TP (B-AAC profile) or IP
    – Modbus SL (serial interface)
    – Modbus TCP
    – LonWorks (FFT-10)
    – Profibus
    – CAN bus

  • Drives for electronic expansion valves: Drives for electronic expansion valves that are compatible with the entire Modicon M172 PLC controller series as well as with controllers and electronic expansion valves from third-party suppliers.

  • Accessories for measurement: Special measuring accessories such as humidity and temperature sensors, pressure sensors from our partner Telemecanique Sensors.

  • Software: Programming software and programming accessories
